Storm on Capitol Building a Dark Moment in Our History

Reflecting back on what happened in our Nation’s capital today, I am still in shock. I am hurting for our country right now as we are headed down a very, very dangerous path that I am not sure where it will lead us too. I have never in my life seen our population so divided and hostile.

Donald Trump has blood on his hands. Lives were lost today that never would have been lost if he just conceded the election like a man, instead he is choosing to be a spineless coward who is protecting his fragile ego at all cost. What is happening now is unacceptable.

I see a lot of people on the left dismissing the women who was shot and killed in the Capitol building today but I can’t think like that, I teared up when I read the news she had passed. When I read that news, I saw a life taken from us because she fell down the rabbit hole into a dangerous cult, that made her feel empowered and like she belonged, and she put her life on the line for a man who doesn’t give a shit about the supporters who are so loyal to him. It didn’t have to happen.

The rise of Donald Trump has truly shined a spotlight on how much tribalism is rooted into our politics. I have always thought it to be a problem, people blindly follow their Democratic/Republican leadership no matter what, putting objective facts to the side in the pursuit of making sure everyone knows their side is 100% correct, but Trumpism has taken this to another level. These people adore this man and are quite literally willing to risk their lives to stand behind whatever comes out of his mouth.

Donald Trump has tapped into the deep rooted racist ideology of this country and made people feel confident in their bigotry. No longer do they feel alone in their hatred, they feel empowered by it. They love him because he “tells it like it is” and that is why they feel such an attachment to him. This has reminded me of the unite the right rally that took place in Virginia, in which Donald Trump famously claimed there were “very fine people” on both sides. Anyone who stills claims Trump’s rhetoric isn’t dangerous just isn’t paying attention to what is going on.

Everyone should go watch this clip right now, it shows the type of people Trump is empowering and the violence it can caused and based on today will only get worse. I would also recommend that whole movie as it paints a fantastic picture on racism and racists, but that is beside the point right now.

In the clip above you can hear former KKK leader David Duke talk about how Virginia was the first step in “taking the country back”. Trump’s dog whistling is clear as day if you really pay attention to what he says. The fact you could see multiple confederate flags flying outside and inside the Capitol building today tells you the kind of country they wish they could live in.

I hope Trump is happy with that he has caused as this is now his legacy. He will always be remembered as the man who couldn’t take a loss so he pushed a false election fraud claim to the brink. I really can’t put into words how much of a joke this is to our country and how much of a large stain this point in time will be in our history.

We probably disagree on every political issue there is, but credit to Mike Pence for standing up against the bully and standing up for democracy. Pence was Trump’s yes man for the last 4 years but even he has to draw the line now, this is nonsense and has gone too far.

Sadly, seeing Trump call these rioters special, patriots, and standing up for what is right did not surprise me one bit. He was probably forced to tell them go home peacefully but throughout the day he kept pushing the election fraud narrative and never truly condemned what they did. Dangerous.

I am seeing right wingers, including Fox News commentators Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, saying instead of attacking the rioters we need to understand why they are attacking out like this, which makes my blood boil. I spent months saying I never support violence but people should be trying to understand why BLM are acting out like this and hardly anyone on the right would give that argument even a second thought. Well, now here they are making that exact argument I and many others have been using for BLM protest.

This really touches on the very root of the problems of our country, the media. Fox News and other right wing outlets deserve a lot of blame for what happened today and listening what Tucker Carlson had to say tonight made me lose any little respect I had left for him. Tucker tried to paint the women who sadly died today as an innocent victim, just standing up to the mob and doing what is right for democracy. Dangerous. I refuse to hear any arguments that someone who broke into the Capitol building was an innocent victim, that’s bullshit.

Fox News pounding fear into its viewers non stop is what is leading to this line of thinking from Trump supporters. Every night Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham say how conservatives are under attack, that they are being censored and the election is being ripped from Trump’s hands and that they cannot just sit back and watch it happen. Instilling this fear into people on a nightly basis leads directly to people doing things like what happened today. I also know that the people who stormed our Capitol building today listen to a lot more extremist, far right sources than Fox News, but they are just the example I am citing.

If Trump supporters want to have a conversation about election reform, fine, I am on board as I agree the way we conduct our elections is corrupt and needs serious reform, but I have a feeling a lot of these people aren’t interested in real reform. They are clinging to a completely false narrative that an election that wasn’t close was stolen from their supreme overlord Donald Trump.

If you truly want election reform get on board with getting corporate money out of politicians pockets and a more fair election process that gives 3rd parties a true fighting chance, I would suggest ranked choice voting.

We are also dealing with an organization that is more powerful than I thought, an organization that is a threat to human rights for everyone in this country and democracy, the Proud Boys. I consider the Proud Boys the modern day KKK, a group of bigots that have gotten better at pushing their white power agenda down in the shadows.

Trump telling the Proud Boys to stand back and stand by at one of the debates makes a lot more sense now. I encourage everyone to look more into the Proud Boys and how awful they are but the main thing I will let you know about them is that their leader is on record saying races cannot coexist together and should remain separate.

Yeah.

I hope that everyone can stay safe out there. I have no idea what will happen next but I pray we can avoid more violence and peacefully get Joe Biden in office in 2 weeks. I am ready to move past all of this and focus on fighting for progressive policies but I have a bad feeling Trumpism is here to stay for a while.

This is your legacy now Donald Trump.

  1. Dear Matthew Jaeger,

Thank you for your very timely post. Needless to say, we live in interesting times indeed, but often for the wrong reasons. What a day it was to unfold with sedition and insurrection!

Instead of “Flattening the Curve”, the USA is now “Steepening the Curve”, so much so that the MAGA tagline “Make America Great Again” should be changed to MASA: “Make America Sick Again”!

Here’s my little poem or ditty:

    I can’t bear the POTUS
    Much more than the VIRUS
    For he has been lying
    Even to the dying
    About his true FOCUS

    In a nutshell:
The POTUS’ FOCUS is a hocus-pocus.

Regarding the POTUS’ Twitter and Facebook accounts, some would even argue that they should have been suspended or terminated a long time ago for continually unleashing falsehood, misinformation and mass distrust. Fortunately, he has not (yet) been given free access to software or button(s) with which to launch weapon(s) of mass destruction.

In any case, those who are fair-minded and discerning are not easily swayed by his constant thrashing around and beating in the bush. Speaking of whether “the president really is a very stable genius”, SoundEagle’s adage is that Trump is a fool’s idea of a genius. In addition, the POTUS has long slid from being a “Law and Order” President to a “Flaw and Border” President.

Speaking of critical thinking and many other complex behavioural, sociocultural and political issues, I have recently published a very detailed post entitled “Misquotation Pandemic and Disinformation Polemic: Mind Pollution by Viral Falsity” at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2020/12/19/misquotation-pandemic-and-disinformation-polemic-mind-pollution-by-viral-falsity/

I would be delighted if you could kindly submit your comment to my said article, as I am very keen and curious to know what you think or make of it regarding the increasingly pressing issues that many of us are facing.
