During his town hall on CNN last night Biden completely shut down the idea that he will push to cancel up to 50k in student loan debt. A person in the audience asked how will Biden make canceling more than 10k in student debt happen and he bluntly replied “I will not make that happen”.
Can’t say I am surprised but it was definitely disappointing to hear him so clearly shoot the idea down like that. It also got worse when he expanded on the issue and called for more means testing when it comes to canceling student loan debt, saying students that go to more prestigious schools shouldn’t have their debt canceled. Hearing something will be means tested always makes me angry, because it almost always, if not always, leaves out people that desperately need help or who could have greatly benefitted.
I am not interested in hearing how we shouldn’t bail people out of their mistakes, the banks and wall street have gotten trillions upon trillions of relief over the history of our country and it’s about damn time the Government gives some relief to the American people. Canceling up to 50k of student loan debt would be completely life changing for millions of Americans and be a big help to the economy as well. If someone gets their debt lifted they have more disposable income to put into the economy, not to mention lifting that debt increases the likely hood of someone being able to move out.
Thankfully Biden’s remarks have gotten a bunch of pushback from Democrats, including from Elizabeth Warren, Nina Turner, Andrew Yang, Chuck Schumer and many more. We can’t see Biden’s remarks as a defeat, it needs to be extra motivation to keep campaigning and pushing for at the very least 50k in student loan forgiveness.
Nothing makes me more frustrated than the Government having all the money and power in the world to do something that would drastically change so many people’s lives for the better and just simply choosing not to. Us Americans deserve better and we need to keep being vocal about it.
