I think I need to start this article with this, Donald Trump should absolutely face consequences for what happened last week at the Capitol. His rhetoric and constant nudging of his supporters absolutely helped contribute to the storming of the Capitol and it’s not something we can just ignore and move past. He knew his supporters were desperate and might do something crazy, and that’s exactly what they did.
However, I find this 2nd attempt to impeach Trump to be a waste of time. Instead of focusing their efforts on pushing the stimulus package over the line and preparing to get bills ready to be passed once Biden takes office, all we are hearing about from politicians and the media is impeachment now. It’s a distraction that doesn’t need to be there.
I say this because there is a different solution, that would hold Trump accountable, be easier to pass and be much less of a distraction. They should use the 14th Amendment on Trump to make sure he can never run for public office again. I know they know about this amendment too because they are threatening GOP Senators with it right now.
This would hold Trump accountable, as he wouldn’t even have the option of running again in 2024, which would save the whole country a lot of unnecessary stress over the next 4 years. I also think it would be easier to pass, as it would only need a simple majority to pass and I have a feeling you could get a decent amount of Republicans on board. I get the sense a lot of Republicans want to move on from the Trump era, and getting rid of any potential 2024 run from Trump would be a huge relief for many of them and make their careers a little easier.
With how little time is left in Trump’s presidency and how long it will take to get a successful impeachment over the line, it all feels like a huge waste of time to me when the 14th amendment is right there to use.
