With Warnock and Ossoff Wins, Democrats Have No Excuses

In a surprise to many, both Democratic candidates were able to win their respective run off elections and defeat the 2 incumbent Republicans, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. I know this was a surprise to me, personally, as I was very confident Warnock would win but did not think Ossoff would knock off Perdue. Credit to Ossoff and his campaigning though, I think him centering his campaign on the 2k stimulus checks is what helped push him over the line.

Putting control of the Senate to the side for a moment, it is a great victory to get David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler out of our Government. These were 2 of the most corrupt people in all of DC and getting them out is a huge victory in itself. Throughout all of this I just couldn’t help but to find it hilarious that the 2 candidates Republicans had to put all their faith in were neck deep in insider trading scandals.

It was also a historic victory, as Warnock is Georgia’s first ever black senator, that’s the kind of progress we like to see from the south. I try to avoid identity politics for the most part and just strictly focus on a person’s platform, but it did feel symbolic seeing a black man and a Jewish man win in the wake of everything that is going on in our country right now.

Stacy Abrams also deserves massive credit, I can’t possibly respect her enough for the work she does combating voter suppression in these big cities. Going to college in Louisville the past 4 years I was able to see first hand how they surpess voting in big cities with high black population. Just as an example, my small hometown in the suburbs of Ohio that has a population of about 50,000 people has the same amount of voting locations as the big city of Louisville.

Organizers also deserve massive credit, as the huge democratic voter turnout for a run off election is what tipped the scales in favor of the blue team. I know I followed closely and was involved in the organizing efforts of Humanity Forward and the Sunrise Moment, so I can personally say how hard those 2 organizations were working and I know there were many more out there that deserve credit as well.

But back to the main point at hand here, the Democrats now have the Presidency, House and the Senate, they have absolutely zero excuses left to not get things done. You still constantly hear how Mitch McConnell didn’t allow Obama to get anything done, well Joe Biden, that is no longer a problem, get things done. I know I and many others on the left will be holding Joe very accountable for what he is able to do now and accomplish now.

In short term gain, this makes it extremely likely we are able to pass 2k stimulus checks and finally give struggling Americans some much needed help and relief. The issue of 2k checks is, in my opinion, really the main reason the Republicans lost these 2 races. Yes, Trump being his petty self encouraged a lot of his supporters not to vote in this election but McConnell coming out and blocking the stimulus checks made the Democrats the party of cash relief for the people, and they did a fantastic job driving that point home. With this, and I am guessing here as I haven’t seen any official data, Democrats made sure to get out and vote, moderates leaned Democrat and Republicans either stayed home because of Trump or because they are struggling and could really use some relief.

Thank you Bernie Sanders for pushing the 2k stimulus checks so hard, as they have overwhelming fantastic approval among the public, the latest poll I saw saying 87% of Americans support it. This is a vindication that economic populism works and is a winning issue to run on. The majority of Americans in this country deal with a ton of financial insecurity and stress, so making it clear you will fight for them and fight for getting them help so they can live a life of dignity without having to worry about money everyday is a great way to win a ton of votes.

As for the 2 winning candidates, I find myself really liking everything I have heard from Warnock. He has charisma, his words tell me he cares and wants to fight for justice in our society and help people, I can really hear the passion in his voice when he talks. I think he will be a really good Senator for Georgia and the US. Ossoff I am lower on, as I find him to be the typical cookie cutter politician that won’t fight hard for good policies, but he did well campaigning on the 2k checks so I will remain somewhat hopeful for him and hope he proves me wrong.

The left has been beaten down a lot recently but recent events have started to turn in our favor. We have a great opportunity in front of us now and we must work harder than ever to get real necessary changes done in this country.
