With the honeymoon of Biden’s victory dying down we are getting back to reality and it’s not great. Biden appointed Rep. Cedric Richmond to a high profile position in the White House office that is related to working with climate activists.
Richmond’s track record, to put it bluntly, is awful. He is one of the top recipients of fossil fuel money in the Democratic party and has routinely voted with Republicans on environmental issues.
In a moment like this it is really important to remember while, yes, Biden will be better on progressive issues compared to Trump (excluding criminal and prison reform) he is still our enemy. Biden is still a career politician with big cooperations and, in this case, big oil companies in his pockets which will sway his interest away from the American people in many cases.
This is why we need to not be silent and make sure we are holding Joe Biden accountable throughout his time in office and not letting the Democrats get complacent. While I think reasonable people expected Biden’s cabinet to have its fair share of corrupt cooperate hacks, to have his first climate appointment be a guy with thousands of dollars in his pocket from fossil fuel companies is a slap in the face, especially when he ran on strong climate action during his campaign.
Biden will undoubtably be better than Trump’s active anti-climate agenda, however, this appointment plus his flip flopping on his fracking stance leading up to the election is a cruel reminder he can’t be trusted and and is still far from what the future of our planet needs.
Thankfully, AOC has gained a huge following and real influence and she hasn’t backed down after Biden’s wins, still actively standing up for progressives and, most importantly, still pushing the importance of a Green New Deal. We could really use more AOC’s in public office.
