With his loss of the election all but certain at this point, Trump is refusing to go down peacefully, filing lawsuits in multiple states and claiming that he is the true winner of the election. A report from John Santucci also suggests Trump is set on taking Fox News down with him.
This is huge news and if I were the GOP I would be very worried. Trump’s main base will be loyal to the main in whatever he does and wherever he goes, so if Trump decides to direct his anger towards Fox, that spells trouble for Republicans ready to move on from the Trump era.
I have already seen some of Trump’s biggest supporters (Charlie Kirk, Terrence Williams) on twitter calling out fellow conservatives and elected GOP officials for being silent and not fighting for Trump. Trump has already made it clear that he most likely will never concede he lost this election and his supporters will stay behind him the whole way, they will continue to fight conservatives that want to move on.
This spells bad news for the GOP in 2022. Because of the need for a runoff in Georgia we don’t know for certain yet but it looks likely the Democrats won’t be able to take the Senate, however, once again the Republicans have more seats up than the Democrats for 2022 (currently 21-13 barring any changes regarding the results of the runoff in Georgia). If Trump gets his TV network up and running and continues his attacks towards Fox, the Republicans are in serious danger of losing the Senate, which would mean the Democrats would have the Presidency, House and Senate going into the 2024 election.
While, yes, a large section of Trump supporters will still vote for Republicans, Trump will certainly turn a portion of his base against the party. This is a huge opportunity for the Democrats and they must take advantage. Democrats massively underperformed on election day, failing to grab the Senate and losing seats in the House, however, left policies like a living wage and drug decriminalization crushed wherever they were on the ballot. I hope the DNC can look at this and realize they need to put up candidates that stand for something instead of putting up safe centrist who continue to come up short despite receiving millions in donations.
I still don’t have faith the Democrats will get their act together but lucky for them it looks like the GOP is about to implode, surely they won’t be able to screw this up, right?
