Pro drug policies won big on election day, taking a clean sweep and passing everywhere they were on the ballot.
Here is everything that passed:
Arizona, Montana, New Jersey, and South Dakota all voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
Mississippi and South Dakota voted to legalize medical marijuana.
Oregon voted to decriminalize all drugs and also voted to legalize psilocybin for therapeutic use.
Washington DC voted to decriminalize psychedelic plants
It cannot be stated enough how huge this is, as someone who believes all drugs should be decriminalized nationwide, it makes me happy the public is ready to embrace pro drug policy and end the corrupt war on drugs, even a majority of conservatives take a left stance on this issue.
The biggest takeaway for me was Oregon becoming the first state to decriminalize the possession of all drugs. This was a neccesary step in the right direction, locking people up for personal choices has always been wrong and decriminalizing it also allows for police to focus on more serious issues in their communities.
Drug addiction is an enormous problem throughout our country and people cannot get the help they need if they are thrown in a jail cell. Many family members who have a loved one with a serious drug problem often avoid seeking help because they don’t want to see them get locked away. Drug addicts deserve to have safe injection rehab centers available to them, so they can safely scale down their drug use in a supervised environment until their body is no longer reliant on the drug.
On the topic of legal weed, I think we are getting closer and closer to it being legalized nationwide and it is about time. The government is missing out on so much potential tax revenue by not having it legal nationwide and it is about time they finally take advantage.
It is also worth noting that all of these measures won with big support, every single one won by at least 5 points.
There is still lots of work left to do to end the corrupt war on drugs but these results from last night are very encouraging and tell me the majority of Americans are on our side.
